Lactanet Canada is a producer-led national organisation created by a partnership of Canadian Dairy Network (CDN), CanWest DHI and Valacta, providing all components of genetic evaluation, milk recording, herd management software and solutions, applied research and innovation, advisory services, knowledge transfer and dairy cattle traceability. Lactanet is seeking an enthusiastic person to join its team of globally recognized geneticists for the continuous improvement, development and delivery of national genetic and genomic evaluation services.

GENETICIST – Guelph ON

                                                                                                                                            

Reporting to the Manager of Genetic Evaluations, and working from the Guelph office, this position provides the opportunity for a qualified geneticist to work within a strong team environment and directly contribute to genetic progress of dairy cattle breeds in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Main responsibilities of the successful candidate will be the maintenance and execution of genetic and/or genomic evaluation systems for a variety of traits as required, in accordance with the expertise of the individuals involved.
  • The successful candidate will be involved in responding to technical inquiries from the Canadian industry and international organizations related to Canadian genetic evaluations.
  • Presentations to industry groups for improving their understanding of current and future systems will also be required.

Requirements

  • PhD in animal breeding, or equivalent training and experience
  • Sound understanding of the theory and application of linear statistical models in genetic and genomic evaluation, including single-step methodology
  • Strong computer programming skills in Fortran, C, R and/or SAS
  • Knowledge and experience with managing large datasets of SNP genotypes, including haplotype analysis, imputation methods and computational strategies
  • A self-motivator with excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Leadership, good team worker and eager to learn
  • Practical knowledge of dairy cattle improvement in Canada and a working knowledge of the French language are both significant assets of the ideal candidate
